HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

The Mahatlani and Wayeni Communities used to send their children to Hluvuka High School at Bungeni in order to receive their Secondary School education in the 70’s. The learners have to walk on foot across the Klein Leataba River. During the rainy season the learners couldn’t go to school as the river became flooded and water flowed over the low lying and narrow old bridge.

In the early 80’s the then Homeland Government of Gazankulu decided to build a Secondary school that would be shared by the Mahatlani and Wayeni communities. Lack of government funds meant that the two communities had to foot the bill, thereby building the first classrooms from mud bricks in 1981. The first Grade 8 learners were admitted to the school in 1982 with Mr R. Shipalana as Principal and Mr M.E. Nkuna as one of the first Educators. The feeder primary Schools during that period were Mahatlani, Wayeni and Njakanjaka. The school continued serving the three communities in which the above-mentioned Primary Schools are located until Marholeni and George Mswazi High Schools were built at Njhakanjhaka and Wayeni respectively and this happened in the 90’s.

From that time onwards, the people of Mahatlani started to engage with the Limpopo Province Department of Education with the aim of moving the School to a site at Mahatlani village. Construction at the new site finally started in the year 2010, but because of some problems beyond the control of the community, the new school has not yet been completed.

As the old school had become too dilapidated to be used, learners had to relocate to the yet to be

completed school on August 1, 2013 using desks borrowed from Kulani Primary School at Tiyani village.

At the moment the school community is facilitating the name-changing from Mahatlani Wayeni to Frank Mahatlani Secondary School.
